One of my earliest installations, Columns was a great example of a simple idea that was hard to execute. The idea- floating cylinders that glowed from underneath- has a power about it that is undeniable. In the computer renderings, the images have a monolithic quality, and seem almost spiritual. In practice, this idea presented several logistical challenges. This was an idea that absolutely needed a clean, sharp aesthetic to work properly. Unfortunately, the softgoods in Studio 210 are in disrepair, and creating the hovering columns out of them proved to be impossible to do without obvious imperfections. The biggest lesson I took from Columns was to work within the limitations of the space and the materials I had to work with. However, with the right materials, this idea could be one of the strongest to come out of my thesis project. |
