As the name implies, Outside Experiments was no more than a study in using theatrical lighting devices outside of the theater. My assistant and I rigged several lights on the fire escape of Studio 210 and spent an evening trying out different ideas as they came to us. This was an enjoyable project, and it was valuable working in an environment that we could not completely control- your ideas must be specific if you are battling conventional and practical sources. This idea drew people in from right off the street- several students from the New England Conservatory came and asked us what we were doing. While the results as displayed in the photographs are mediocre, the value of this setup was in the lessons it taught me about working in a non-theatrical environment. |
