Shafts

Shafts was the only piece that was conceived right from the beginning as a movement based piece. I hung forty strips of 1”x1”x8’ pieces of pine at random heights from the Studio 210 Grid. I then hung a scrim between the viewer and the strips. Using automated fixtures, I panned beams of light over the pine shafts. The result was different sized shadows moving at different speeds across the scrim. The logistics of making the visual effect work properly took a while but once achieved, the piece had a wonderful feeling of depth to it. The biggest setback of the installation was the idea at its’ core- I feel that more than any of the other pieces, this work relied on a gimmick- a trickery of light to succeed. This idea was more about showing off a particular effect than it was a search for beauty. However, even this was a useful piece of knowledge in pursuing later works.
